The Day Master (日主) is the stem of the day pillar. Every other character in the chart is interpreted through its relationship with the Day Master: what supports it, what drains it and what controls it.
Ten stems, ten personalities
Each of the ten stems has a classic image: Jia is a tall tree, Yi a climbing vine, Bing the sun, Ding a candle flame, and so on. These images give a quick feel for temperament.
