East group and West group couple: whose Kua decides the bed direction?
The question
My partner Lucas was born in 1990 (Kua 1) and I was born in 1991 (Kua 6). Our flat in Berlin faces south and the bedroom is in the southeast. Every direction that is good for one of us seems bad for the other. How do we choose the bed direction, and is the flat wrong for me?

The answer
Why nothing lines up
East group and West group are mirror images: the four directions that lift one group are the four that drain the other, with no overlap. This is the most common problem in couples' feng shui and the classical schools have a clear answer: do not look for a compromise direction, allocate the rooms instead.
The flat and the bedroom
A south-facing flat sits in the north, a Kan house, which belongs to the East group: it suits Lucas fully. For Emma it is a West-group person in an East-group house, which is not "wrong", it simply means the flat will not do the work for her; her own directions must.
The southeast bedroom is Sheng Qi, the best sector, for Lucas. For Emma it is Huo Hai, the mildest of the four negative sectors: minor irritations rather than illness or loss. Of all the possible mismatches, this is the one you want.
Bed direction
Sleeping head direction follows one person. Choose the person who sleeps worse or whose health is weaker; if it is even, tradition gives it to the one who earns the household's main income. Two workable options:
- Head to the southeast (Lucas: Sheng Qi; Emma: Huo Hai). The best case for Lucas and the least harmful for Emma. Recommended.
- Head to the north (Lucas: Fu Wei; Emma: Liu Sha). Calmer for Lucas, slightly worse for Emma.
Never choose south (Emma's Jue Ming) or east (Emma's Wu Gui) even though both are excellent for Lucas.
Giving Emma her share
- Put Emma's desk in the west or northwest room, or at least turn her chair to face west (Sheng Qi) when she works.
- Emma should sit facing northeast (Tian Yi) at the dining table; Lucas facing east.
- The stove, if it can be chosen, should sit in a bad direction of the person who cooks less, with the oven door opening toward a good direction of the other.
Couples who split the flat this way, one owning the bedroom direction and the other the work and eating directions, rarely need anything more.
